How to Remove Superfish Malware

How to Remove Superfish Malware

What is Superfish?

Superfish is software installed on most Lenovo machines that has been found to be carrying out malicious man-in-the-middle attacks. If you have a Lenovo machine with Superfish installed then it is recommended that you remove the software - not doing so leaves yourself vulnerable to attacks.

How do I remove Superfish?

The removal process is, thankfully, quite easy however it does involve a number of steps:

First of all, right click the Start button and select Programs and Features. This will open a list of all the software installed on your computer. Find an entry named Superfish Inc. Visual Discovery (or something similar) and double click it. The software will now be removed.

Although nothing will appear on-screen during the uninstallation process, the software is indeed removed. After it is done, Restart the computer.

We now need to remove the certificate the Superfish added to the machine. Press the Windows + R keys - this should open the Run dialog. In it, type certmgr.msc and press run. This should open a new window.

In the left hand pane of this Windows, select Trusted Root Certification Authorities and then Certificates. This should bring up a list of certificates on the machine (in the main pane). Find the certificate named Superfish, Inc. and delete it.

Warning: It is important you only delete the Superfish, Inc. certificate - uninstalling any others may cause severe damage to your computer.

Firefox Instructions

If you have Firefox installed, then there a few extra steps you need to go through. Open up Firefox and type about:preferences#advanced
in the address bar. This should cause the following page to load.

Select Certificates and then View Certificates. Scroll down the list until you find the Superfish entry - once you find it, press the Delete or Distrust... button, then click Ok.
